HOW TO MAKE A SIMPLE BOOKCASE FOR MINI BOOKS
Here’s a step-by-step tutorial to make your own mini
bookcase using just craft sticks, match sticks and cardboard. You’ll need some
wood glue, cutting implements, sandpaper or emery board and a few other things,
but this is a basic, simple design using cheap materials.
I am no carpenter, so apologies for the ‘handmade’, rough finish (and bendy
sides), but this is aimed at the not-so-handy craftsperson, and was made as a
bit of an experiment. Feel free to adapt and improve on this as you wish!
My bookcase was designed to fit my mini books (all the books on the shelves
here are available as printables on this blog).
The ‘large’ craft sticks (2.5cm/1in wide) were an ideal size, They are cheap to
buy, but they tend to be warped, so they won’t make a perfect finish.
Matchsticks work as shelf supports to make assembly easier and for extra
strength, and once again they are cheap but not all uniform and smooth.
I wanted a back for the bookcase so I used cardboard from a tissue box, but you
could of course use any thick card or wood you have access to.
If you would like a stained/varnished finish, apply your
finish before assembling, or the glue will prevent absorption in some spots. If
you wish to paint the shelves, it’s easier to do this before adding the back.
The 3-page instructions can be downloaded here (the PDF is easier to read than
the photo):
